The concept of a narrow “anabolic window” — a 30-minute post-workout period where protein must be consumed for maximum muscle protein synthesis — has largely been debunked by modern research. The window is significantly wider than once believed, particularly when pre-workout nutrition is adequate.
When you train in a fasted state, however, post-workout protein timing becomes considerably more important. The key variable is your pre-workout nutritional status.
What the Research Actually Shows
Practical Protein Timing Protocols
For Morning Training (Fasted)
Consume 30-40g protein within 60 minutes post-training. A fast-digesting whey protein shake is ideal. Break the fast with a complete meal 1-2 hours later.
For Afternoon/Evening Training (Fed)
Timing is more flexible. As long as you hit 30-40g protein within 2-3 hours post-workout, you will maximize MPS. Focus on total daily protein intake (1.6-2.2g/kg) above all else.
Pre-Bed Protein
